Julius King Suggs Obituary

Tabor City, NC

Julius King Suggs was born at home near the intersection of Ramsay Ford Road and Highway 904 in the Dulah-Guideway community on Friday, January 11, 1924.  He lived on that corner for almost all his days before his passing on June 7, 2019 (the 75th anniversary of his arrival in France to fight for generations to come.)  He made a good life there — a loving son, faithful husband, caring father, and giving neighbor. He left briefly as a teenager, breaking his mother Viola’s heart, for an adventure that took him to New York before heading west to fight forest fires in California. He hitch-hiked and rode the rails home before heading off to fight in World War II. He earned a Purple Heart and five Bronze Stars as he survived the Battle of the Bulge before helping free captives from a Nazi death camp and also rescuing the Lipizzan Stallions from likely Soviet destruction in the spring of 1945. He made his mother and father (Daniel King Suggs) proud with his service.

He married Dula Belle Jacobs in 1948 and they reared five children (Janice, Ronnie, Mike, Ken, and Gloria) at that corner. Belle passed in 2013 and Mike, who left him too soon, in 1979.  He was a humble man, not wanting the spotlight. He worked hard and gave unselfishly for his family. He bought Janice a piano and Gloria a pony; he showed Ronnie how to weld and worked side-by-side with Ken at his garage.  He helped shape their lives. He is remembered by his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren in addition to the many people whose lives he touched through his work, friendship, and as a servant for the Lord over many years at Dulah Baptist Church.

He fought for peace, lived each day to give our family peace, and has now found a final peace.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 4 PM in the Dulah Missionary Baptist Church and burial to follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.
